Folks Finance holds $51M across nine chains while its $1B xChain V2 rebuild waits

The busiest screen is a leaderboard
The most-used screen on Folks Finance's Algorand app right now is not a lending market. It is a points leaderboard paginating across 22,504 pages, topped by cross-chain accounts holding more than 3.6 billion points, with Algorand addresses in the billions behind them. The board is the public face of a project between two eras: what began in 2022 as a way to keep governance-locked ALGO liquid now lends across nine blockchains and mints Algorand's leading liquid-staking token, while the flagship rebuild meant to carry the protocol toward a $1 billion total-value-locked target has yet to ship.
From locked governance to nine chains
Folks went to mainnet in 2022, months after the Terra-Luna collapse — timing CEO Benedetto Biondi says forged a mandate to 'focus on building reliable products, not on chasing attention.' Its first product solved a genuine friction: Algorand's governance program locked holders' ALGO for a period in exchange for rewards, leaving the capital idle. Folks' Liquid Governance let users commit ALGO and receive gALGO, a receipt redeemable 1:1 when the period ended, so committed capital could keep earning elsewhere; when Algorand added xGov in 2023, Folks folded the signup into the same interface. That base grew into a general lending protocol — deposits sit in smart contracts rather than with the company, loan terms are enforced on-chain, and liquidations trigger automatically when collateral falls below a threshold — and a fixture of Algorand Foundation incentives: for Governance Period 11 (April to June 2024), Folks was eligible for 1,968,750 ALGO.
In late 2024 the project launched xChain, a separate cross-chain product that 'uses a hub-and-spoke model, with Avalanche as the Hub Chain, managing a unified USDC pool accessible by all spoke chains' — one shared pool serving every connected network, with messages moving through Chainlink CCIP, Circle CCTP and Wormhole. The app now lists Avalanche, Ethereum, Base, BNB Chain, Arbitrum One, Polygon, Sei and Monad alongside Algorand; per the project's archived launch announcement it has onboarded more than 200,000 users across those chains. Monad, added in November 2025 with $45,000 of FOLKS incentives, passed $10 million in TVL within weeks, per a December 2025 report.
A peak, then a slide
That expansion has not translated into sustained growth in total value locked — the dollar value of assets sitting in a protocol's contracts. DeFiLlama puts Folks Finance at about $50.9 million today, down from a peak of $267.8 million in November 2024, with $28.9 million of the current figure on Algorand alone.
Chart: Folks Finance TVL, Sep 2024 – Aug 2026 (DeFiLlama, USD)
A live read of the Algorand app this month shows the split: roughly $32 million deposited across its markets against $10.96 million borrowed, meaning the home chain still carries most of the protocol's deposits — and most of them sit as collateral rather than lent out.
What the Algorand app does today
A new user connects an Algorand wallet, accepts the terms, and can deposit, borrow or stake ALGO directly; a Testnet hands out mock funds for practice. Fourteen markets are listed, with deprecated assets hidden behind a toggle. The dashboard shows how lopsided the collateral pool is:
| Asset | Concept | Real-World Implication |
|---|---|---|
| xALGO | Liquid-staked ALGO, $14.41M deposited | The collateral anchor — just $77K borrowed against it |
| ALGO | Algorand's native token, $10.50M deposited | The one actively used borrow market: $7.10M in loans |
| USDC | Dollar stablecoin, $4.21M deposited | Main working-capital pair, $3.58M borrowed |
| goBTC / goETH | Wrapped Bitcoin and Ethereum, $1.09M / $443K | Single-digit-coin counts, barely borrowed |
| GOLD$ / SILVER$ | Tokenized precious metals, $493K / $658K | Commodity collateral with near-zero borrowing |
Isolated pools ring-fence newer assets — FOLKS ($151K), tALGO ($130K), WBTC, WETH, TINY and a second USDC market — each in its own risk silo with steeper borrow rates (TINY's stable borrow APY tops 55 percent). A separate section lists 18 lending farms: DEX pools built from interest-bearing tokens, made with Tinyman and Pact, that stack lending interest and swap fees in one position. The largest, an ALGO/USDC pool on Pact, holds $81,446 at 12.76 percent APY; the smallest, $1.73.
xALGO: the staking side
Liquid staking is where Folks' Algorand footprint concentrates. Staking ALGO mints xALGO, a tradable receipt for the staked amount plus accruing consensus rewards; the dashboard quotes 1 xALGO redeemable for 1.2199 ALGO while 1 ALGO mints 0.8197 xALGO — the widening spread between the two is the yield accruing inside the token's value rather than a separate payout. The protocol keeps 10 percent of staking rewards as a fee routed to the community treasury, and a 'premium' adjustment on immediate mints compensates the pool for the 320 rounds before newly staked ALGO begins earning. Today 276.89M ALGO are staked against 226.97M xALGO circulating, held by 6,702 addresses, at a 4.28 percent APR; an 'Ultrastake' option borrows against a position to lever it up to 4x. Deposited xALGO is also the app's largest collateral pool, and the token itself — with no manager, freeze or clawback accounts set on-chain — trades around $1.22 with a roughly $280 million market cap, the second-largest ASA on Algorand per Vestige.
Points, tokens and self-referential incentives
The leaderboard from the top of this article is Season 2 of Folks Points, which pays out for depositing, borrowing, staking, swapping, social tasks and referrals on both the Algorand and xChain apps. Points convert into the FOLKS token through airdrops: Season 1 ended with 1.5 million tokens distributed to 5,770 users, with claims from all eight chains, and a snapshot for eligibility was taken October 24. FOLKS, fixed at a total supply of 50 million, began trading in November 2025 on Binance's Alpha market with Binance Futures, Kraken and KuCoin following within the hour, plus DEX pairs on PancakeSwap, LFJ and Tinyman; the Algorand ASA keeps an active manager account — control the team retains over the asset's parameters. Its utility is mostly internal to the protocol: discounted fees on its own swap router and bridge, a gas-token role on xChain, xGov voting and governance over the protocol's own treasury — and the docs themselves warn that 'some of the following utilities might still not be live.' That circularity is worth weighing: the same team issues the points, the token those points convert into, and much of the incentive capital that drives the activity the dashboard reports, while FOLKS' stated value rests largely on discounts and governance inside its own products.
Governance itself is functioning: two proposals have passed this year, including a May 2026 plan to deploy xALGO liquidity on Avalanche (100 percent yes on 33,473 votes) and an April 2026 genesis proposal on early token allocations (99.81 percent on 89,138 votes), with a FOLKS staking module still marked 'SOON' on the governance site. The community infrastructure is substantial: the Discord holds 50,528 members with 1,031 online, the official Telegram 22,490.
The rebuild that hasn't shipped
The centerpiece of the 2026 roadmap — announced December 10, 2025 — is xChain V2: a rewrite of the cross-chain product combining unified pools with vault-based cross-chain loans across EVM and non-EVM networks, backed by 1 million FOLKS in incentives (about $10 million at the time of the announcement) and aimed at a $1 billion TVL target. The same announcement tied V2 to Folks Mobile, a licensed-VASP companion app meant to let users borrow against collateral and spend the proceeds through a debit card; the January 2026 roadmap added a new EVM liquid-staking token with one-click strategy vaults. All of it remains in the future tense. V2 was scheduled for H1 2026, but no launch has been announced since; the xChain app still runs the V1 product across its eight chains, and no V2 audit appears in the published audit list, whose latest entry is October 2025. The $1 billion figure is a projection, not a current state — the protocol sits at roughly one-twentieth of it. Risk is also architectural: the cross-chain model leans on third-party messaging layers (Wormhole, CCIP, CCTP), which add counterparty and bridge risk that Algorand's own single-chain guarantees do not cover.
The security record
The published audits cover the shipping products, with reports in a public GitHub repository:
| Auditor | What was reviewed | When |
|---|---|---|
| Adevar | Algorand Wormhole NTT | Oct 2025 |
| Coinspect | ALGO Liquid Staking | Aug 2024 |
| Trail of Bits | V2 | Q4 2022 |
| Certik | V2 fStaking | Q4 2022 |
Earlier work by Runtime Verification and Vantage Point rounds out a record that began with the 2022 V1 launch. Development is visibly active: 17 public repos, including the Algorand JavaScript SDK (42 stars, pushed June 2026) and the xChain smart contracts (pushed March 2026).
The honest bottom line
Folks Finance's substance today is on Algorand — a working lending market, a staking economy with real on-chain activity, a functioning points and governance loop — while its ambitions point elsewhere. Whether the unreleased rebuild closes the gap between the two is the story to watch; the pieces it would need, unified pools, live governance and a distribution channel, are already running, just not yet under one roof.
