Bitrue pays 6.5% APY on ALGO for new users; existing holders earn 0.5%

Staking the Network Without the Node
In January 2025, Algorand switched on real staking rewards: validators — the participants who propose and confirm blocks under its Pure Proof-of-Stake consensus, a mechanism where the network's own token is staked rather than expending computing energy — became eligible for 10 ALGO per block proposed, a payout that decays 1% every millionth block, plus half of the block's transaction fees. The design carries none of the conditions common on other chains: no slashing (forfeiting staked funds as a penalty for misbehavior) and no lock-up, with rewards paid as each block finalizes, roughly every 2.8 seconds, and compounding automatically.
The catch is the door. Solo participation requires running a node with at least 30,000 ALGO — a threshold set by community vote in Governance Period 10. That barrier is exactly what centralized-exchange products were built to remove, and Bitrue — a Singapore-founded exchange operating since 2018 that says it has served 41M+ users — is one of the venues the Algorand Foundation itself lists for staking, alongside Bitpanda, Binance, Gate.io and others. The Foundation's Bluesky account announced the integration on April 23, 2025: 'Enjoy flexible staking with no lock-up, no slashing, and full control over your ALGO,' and its April 2025 ecosystem report recorded that 'Bitrue enabled Algorand staking for its millions of users.'
What that integration pays today is a 0.5% base annual rate on the standard pool, with a separate tier for new users paying 6.5% for their first 60 days. The gap between those figures and what the network yields directly — and the path the advertised rate has taken in between — is the story that follows.
Inside Power Piggy's ALGO Pool
Bitrue runs ALGO staking through Power Piggy, its flexible-staking brand: the balance sits inside the exchange's earn product rather than being registered as an online participant in consensus from a user-held wallet, so rewards are Bitrue's daily payout, not the protocol's per-block payment. Consistent with the no-lockup model, funds can be unfrozen at any time and re-staked whenever pool capacity is open. Interest begins accruing one day after investing, with the first payment two days later, distributed daily at 16:00 UTC; funds unfrozen during the 16:00–18:00 UTC calculation window earn nothing that day.
The offer terms state that 'Bitrue guarantees the safety of your principal and earnings.' That is a custodial promise from the exchange, not a protocol property — which makes the counterparty, and its history, part of the relevant risk picture covered at the end of this piece.
The standard pool and the new-user tier, both live as of mid-August 2026, differ in four respects:
| Concept | Standard pool | New-user exclusive | Real-World Implication |
|---|---|---|---|
| Minimum stake | 10 ALGO | 5 ALGO | Entry is nearly free for small holders |
| Bonus interest period | None | 60 days | The promotional rate only applies inside the window |
| Remaining capacity | ≈724.9M ALGO | 200M ALGO | Pool space is not the constraint |
| At bonus-period expiry | — | Auto-redeemed or moved to a matching Earn product, per user settings | Rewards stop being promotional without any action |
Both pools share the same rules page, and its own terms are worth quoting: the rate 'will dynamically change based on demand and market conditions,' and Bitrue 'reserves the right to adjust the rules of the event at any time.' The number on the page is Bitrue's to set and change — which matters given the rate history covered next.
The BTR Lever
The advertised yield is also a function of BTR, Bitrue's native token, through a three-tier system based on the dollar value of BTR held in the user's account. Under $500 in BTR earns the base rate; $500–$10,000 multiplies it by 1.034; more than $10,000 multiplies it by 1.2. The boosted outcomes the page displays:
| Concept | Multiplier | Standard pool | New-user tier | Real-World Implication |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| BTR under $500 | ×1 | base | base | No boost |
| BTR $500–$10,000 | ×1.034 | 0.51% | 6.72% | Modest lift on both tiers |
| BTR over $10,000 | ×1.2 | 0.6% | 7.8% | The top tier adds 0.1 percentage points on the standard pool |
Note the design: the yield lever is the exchange's own token, so earning the best rate means holding BTR — an asset whose value is Bitrue's own business, not Algorand's. That is a loyalty structure with a built-in concentration cost, applied uniformly across every Power Piggy product, not just ALGO.
A Rate History Written in Its Own Marketing
The current base rate is not where the product started, and Bitrue's own blog posts document the arc the chart below traces. A late-April 2025 guide told readers the APY 'can range from 0.288486% to 0.3348%' depending on BTR holdings, with a 100 ALGO minimum. A week later, on May 6, 2025, a post headlined 'APY 7.3%!' declared that figure the 'Highest APY Among CEX,' rising to 8.76% with BTR — while a companion guide published the same month advertised 'up to 20% APY.' In June 2025, a campaign running June 12–19 offered 10% APY on a 7-day lock-up, requiring new users to deposit at least 300 ALGO for a 30 ALGO bonus.
Chart: Bitrue's advertised ALGO staking rate (%)
The arc speaks for itself: promotional peaks were brief, and the durable base rate is the chart's final bar — close to where the product began. The one thing that has genuinely changed is the barrier: the minimum stake has dropped from 100 ALGO to 10. None of those figures appears on the product page today; all of them are Bitrue's own self-published marketing, on rates the terms explicitly make adjustable.
What the Yield Actually Buys You
Against the alternatives, the value proposition narrows fast. The native route is live and sizable — about 20.6% of total ALGO supply (≈2.01B of 9.77B) is online securing the network at the time of writing — but it demands the 30,000 ALGO solo threshold noted above, or a DeFi path. Third-party estimates put protocol-level yield near 5% APY in early 2026, and liquid-staking protocols such as Folks Finance have reported returns above 6%, at the cost of smart-contract risk.
| Concept | Bitrue Power Piggy | Algorand protocol / DeFi | Real-World Implication |
|---|---|---|---|
| Entry requirement | 10 ALGO | 30,000 ALGO solo; any amount via liquid staking | The exchange route removes the barrier entirely |
| Where tokens sit | Exchange custody | Your own wallet, or a smart-contract pool | Counterparty risk versus self-custody |
| Typical yield | ≈0.5% base, Bitrue-set and dynamic | ≈5% protocol; 6%+ reported via liquid staking | A steep discount bought with convenience |
The arithmetic makes the tradeoff concrete. At the time of writing (August 20, 2026), ALGO traded near $0.0854. A 10,000 ALGO position — about $854 — earns roughly 50 ALGO a year on the standard tier, around $4.30; in the 60-day new-user tier it earns about 107 ALGO over the window, roughly $9, before rolling over to the base rate; with the maximum BTR boost, the base rises to 0.6%, about $5.12 a year. The same 10,000 ALGO through liquid staking at the reported 6%+ would return on the order of 600 ALGO, about $51 a year — an order-of-magnitude gap, minus the exchange's convenience.
None of this makes the product a scam; it makes it a plainly priced convenience with two caveats that belong next to any ALGO placed here. First, the principal guarantee is Bitrue's own word: the exchange has disclosed two hot-wallet breaches — in 2019, when a theft of XRP and ADA cost it several million dollars (contemporaneous reports ranged from about $4 million to $5 million) and all affected users were compensated in full, and in 2023, a roughly $23 million incident — while third-party reviews note Bitrue is not regulated by a financial authority with stringent protocols. Second, the rate is a variable Bitrue controls; the history above shows how far and how fast it can move.
For a holder with a small balance who wants daily liquidity and zero setup, Bitrue's ALGO pool is a functioning, official-partner on-ramp to yield — the 5 ALGO minimum on the new-user tier is about as low a bar as staking gets. For anyone with meaningful ALGO, the yield gap quantified above, and the counterparty history, argue for reading the promotional numbers as what they are: marketing.
