Python.org features Lofty's one-week build of instant property-redemption contracts

The last slow step in a real-estate sale

Getting into a rental property on Lofty has always been the fast part: pick a house, buy a tokenized slice of its ownership for as little as $50, and start collecting daily rent. Getting out — when the owners vote to sell the whole building — is where real estate's old slowness used to resurface, with proceeds needing to travel back to every shareholder through title, brokerage and legal channels. A smart contract released in 2025 attacks exactly that step, letting Lofty users instantly redeem their tokens for the value of a sold property share. The company's engineering team built it in one week, and that build is now the subject of a success story on python.org, the official home of the Python Software Foundation¹, where it has been featured since June 2025.

The profile was written by Brian Whippo, then head of developer relations at the Algorand Foundation² — since promoted to senior director of integrations and developer tooling — so it functions as both a technical case study and the network's own pitch for Python-native smart contracts. Its subject, Lofty³, a Y Combinator-backed startup, turns the equity of rental properties into digital tokens that trade on a secondary marketplace the way stocks do.

Tokenized property, on-chain

Each property sits in its own LLC, and ownership is issued as Algorand Standard Assets — tokens created natively on the chain's base layer, with the same speed and security as ALGO itself. Investors buy in for as little as $50⁴, receive daily rent distributions around midnight UTC, and vote on decisions from major repairs to whether to sell. At the time the profile was published, more than 180 properties had been tokenized and over $3M⁵ in rental income had reached users; by July 2026 the platform reported $5.2M⁶ distributed to more than 40,000⁷ investors across 21 U.S. states, with total value locked past $100M⁸.

The machinery is visible on the ledger. The platform's issuance address has created 322 asset IDs and 244 applications, including per-property master contracts that carry dedicated rent and reserve account fields. That same address was still processing application calls as of Aug. 18, 2026 — the daily distribution engine running in plain sight.

Orders, pools, and the redemption path

Trading on Lofty runs on smart contracts — programs stored on the blockchain that enforce rules automatically — in two established patterns. Limit orders are peer-to-peer swaps routed by Lofty, with funds settling directly between buyer and seller wallets and never touching Lofty's own accounts; market orders fill instantly against liquidity pools that are themselves smart-contract escrow accounts. The redemption feature is a third pattern: when a property is sold, holders exchange their tokens for their share of the proceeds on-chain.

Two properties of the network make that instant redemption trustworthy. Algorand settles with single-block finality — once a block is confirmed it is final, with no probabilistic settlement window — and its atomic-transfer feature groups transactions so they all succeed or all fail together, meaning a token-for-value exchange completes as one unit rather than risking a partial payout. Native multisig support is what let Lofty build the embedded wallets on its dashboard, the destination for those proceeds. The profile does not detail the user-side trigger — Lofty's help center publishes no separate redemption explainer — but the contract-level behavior is what the case study documents.

Why a one-week build mattered

That one-week figure is the profile's marquee claim, quoted verbatim: 'It took the Lofty engineering team only one week to build the smart contracts for the new token redemption feature.' The context makes the speed meaningful. Lofty's core contracts were originally written in TEAL, the low-level language that compiles directly to the Algorand Virtual Machine, but the team has shifted new development to Algorand Python — 'the team has shifted to developing new features in Python', as the profile puts it. Algorand Python is a partial implementation of the language that compiles Python source to AVM bytecode through its PuyaPy compiler, and the profile argues Algorand is the only Layer-1 network offering native Python programmability. The piece includes a sample Swap contract that exchanges one token for another at a fixed 1:2 ratio, holding separate incoming and outgoing pools with governor-admin functions and liquidity checks — a small illustration of the pattern the platform uses at scale.

The toolchain is not a static snapshot. The PuyaPy compiler shipped v5.10.0 on Aug. 17, 2026 — the day before this article — and Algorand Python 5.0 added a language server for autocompletion and inline diagnostics in November 2025, alongside AlgoKit⁹, the Foundation's development toolkit that scaffolds Python contract projects. The framework package on PyPI drew 1,406 downloads in the past month. By contrast, PyTeal — the older Python binding for TEAL, which still carries 290 GitHub stars — has not had a tagged release since February 2025. The development momentum, like Lofty's own roadmap, sits with Algorand Python.

What the profile leaves out

The python.org piece is the Foundation's own account, so its claims — the one-week build, the five-plus-year uptime history, the 'fractions of a penny' fees — are first-party assertions rather than independent findings. Independent context is more mixed. A detailed April 2026 review rates Lofty 2.9 out of 5, calling it the last US-accessible, retail-open, blockchain-native fractional real-estate platform after rivals RealT and HoneyBricks exited or shelved their products. It confirms the platform pays rent daily and that cumulative distributions are real, but reports that liquidity varies sharply by property — 'obscure or underperforming properties can be effectively unsellable' — and that the retail structure is regulatorily untested, with property LLCs not registered as securities offerings. The same review flags an unresolved operational case: the property at 809 Kenmore Blvd, Akron, Ohio was condemned and is tied to an active lawsuit against Lofty and its property manager. Trustpilot shows a bimodal 3.7 out of 5 across 69 reviews, with the negative cluster concentrated among users trying to withdraw larger positions.

It is worth separating the two exit paths. The instant-redemption contract answers the property-sale exit — a whole building selling and proceeds needing to reach every holder. The secondary marketplace is the other path, and that is where the liquidity criticism applies. The profile documents one; the review documents the other.

The signal behind the profile

For a reader, the profile is worth knowing for what it says about Algorand's developer bet: the network's flagship real-world-asset deployment is now a demonstration of its Python-native contract stack, and the chain is still running the daily distributions that build describes. The honest caveat is that Lofty's platform carries real, unresolved questions about liquidity and regulation. But the redemption contract itself shows the direction: when a property sells, the last slow step of real estate can be a single on-chain transaction.
