Folks Finance forum steers FOLKS token through its first two governance votes

The Quiet Room Where Decisions Get Made

On October 23, 2025, a community member known as ROAM posted a plan to the Folks Finance Forum: take roughly $800,000 of the protocol's idle community-treasury funds and park them in liquidity pools paired with the FOLKS token that was about to launch, redirecting earned yield into those pools monthly so the treasury would collect fees while deepening the market for its own governance token. Filo, the most active team voice on the board, replied that the approach 'will be considered.' The exchange is the forum in miniature — modest in scale, public in every word, and consequential in what it feeds.

Folks Finance is a non-custodial lending protocol: users deposit crypto as collateral and borrow other assets against it, with interest rates set by supply and demand. It began on Algorand and expanded across chains using cross-chain messaging built on Wormhole, Chainlink CCIP and Circle CCTP. According to its archived launch announcement, it has onboarded over 200,000 users across eight chains and at one point held more than $400 million in total value locked (TVL — the dollar value of assets sitting in a protocol's contracts; that figure spans all eight chains). The forum, a Discourse board online since at least March 2023, is where the decisions of the FOLKS-token era were worked out in public first: the launch itself, the protocol's first two governance votes, an 11-asset delisting.

Six Categories, One Job

The board's six categories map directly onto the protocol's operating concerns.

The categories are not just labels; they encode a process. When the team proposed restructuring the Community Coin Contest's prizes midway through the 2024 round — raising first place's share from 50% to 65% and trimming second and third — commenters pushed back, arguing it was 'unfair to change the rules in the middle of a game' and that the change should wait for the next period. That is the kind of correction a working governance surface exists to catch.

The Treasury, Debated in Public

The treasury debates show how the forum's influence flows. In June 2025, ROAM catalogued idle funds — roughly 888,000 ALGO, 900,000 USDC, 1.47 million xALGO, plus tokenized bitcoin, ether and metals — and proposed depositing them into the lending market to earn yield. Filo explained the funds were protocol revenue sitting in a wallet rather than deployed in the lending market, and that putting them to work requires a community vote: the assets were allocated to the community treasury on the understanding they would not be used in DeFi without approval.

The launch made the question concrete. In October 2025 the team announced that up to $1.5 million¹ of treasury funds would cover FOLKS token generation event (TGE) expenses — liquidity provisions, security deposits, operational costs — with details withheld under exchange confidentiality clauses, and with the liquidity 'withdrawn in the future and returned back to the treasury if deemed no longer necessary.' ROAM's plan, described above, was an amendment to that same pot of money: rather than spend the balance, put it to work. The thread ends with Filo's terse acknowledgment; no adoption or rejection is documented on the board. The treasury wallet itself remains plainly visible and active: it held about 786,000 ALGO across 47 assets as of mid-August 2026, with transactions on the same day.

A Token Launch, Planned in Public

FOLKS launched on November 6, 2025, with a fixed supply of 50 million² tokens, split six ways per the protocol's tokenomics docs:

At the TGE, 12,700,475³ FOLKS — 25.4%⁴ — were unlocked. Airdrop Season 1 reserved 3%⁵ of supply for Folks Points holders, 0.16%⁶ for Founders Pass NFT holders and 0.13% across seven partner campaigns, based on an October 24 snapshot. The launch announcement lists Coinbase Ventures, Jump, ParaFi, OKX Ventures and Borderless Capital among backers. 'After five years of building, the FOLKS token launch is a major milestone, but it's still only the beginning,' CEO Benedetto Biondi said in that announcement.

Nine months on, the token's on-chain footprint is modest. FOLKS (asset 3203964481¹, identified in the protocol's own contracts documentation) trades on Tinyman at roughly $1.80 with about $94,000 of liquidity and $3,900 of 24-hour volume; Pact lists ten FOLKS pairs, though the pools sampled showed no liquidity. The app itself now runs a FOLKS isolated market holding 82,649 FOLKS deposits worth about $149,000. As this outlet reported in June, DappRadar's Algorand leaderboard still prices FOLKS at $0.0999 — an 18-fold gap against the on-chain DEX price.

The First Two Votes

The governance portal at stake.folks.finance went live in spring 2026 using snapshot-based voting: eligibility and weight are fixed by each holder's balance at a single recorded moment (the snapshot), so tokens acquired after voting opens cannot be used to influence it. Each token equals one vote, and a proposal passes by majority, per the portal's FAQ.

The first measure, 'Genesis Governance Proposal: Temporary Alignment Measures for Early Token Allocations,' asked holders to approve a temporary, up-to-12-month transfer restriction on allocations held by a defined subset of early supporters, advisors and core contributors. It passed April 28–May 4, 2026, with 89,138.098⁷ votes and 99.81% in favor.

It is worth being clear about what that vote did and did not test. The proposal came from the team, was framed by the team, and restricts transfers by insiders — which has the effect of protecting the token's price from early-seller pressure. Whether a reader reads that as a stability buffer or an insider safeguard, the forum itself offered no dissent on record, and token distribution beyond the published tokenomics percentages is not disclosed.

The second measure concerned xALGO, the liquid staking token at the center of Folks' Algorand business: users stake ALGO and receive a tradable derivative token (xALGO) representing the staked amount plus accruing rewards, so the capital stays usable elsewhere. It is bridgeable across Ethereum, Arbitrum, Avalanche, Base, BNB and Polygon via Wormhole's NTT framework. The 'xALGO Liquidity Pool Deployment on Avalanche' measure authorized $30,000⁸ of community-treasury funds — 15,000 USDC⁹ plus $15,000 of xALGO — for a new xALGO/USDC pool on Avalanche, which won a forum poll of 30 voters over Arbitrum, Base, BNB, Ethereum and Polygon. It passed May 19–25, 2026, with 33,473.217¹⁰ votes and unanimous support. Whether the pool actually deployed is not verifiable from Algorand-side tools, since the deployment lives on an EVM chain.

Supply, Explained in Advance

Two forum posts this spring show the board's transparency function around token supply. On April 21, the Foundation announced it was minting the full Strategic Supporters allocation of 2,472,358.33¹¹ FOLKS ahead of the scheduled May 6 unlock start, moving it to a Foundation-controlled multisig so a third-party automated unlocking tool could distribute it on schedule — and warned that supply trackers might briefly show an increase even though no tokens were released early. On June 23, it announced a supply alignment: a portion of the Community allocation reserved for an initiative that never launched had stayed unminted on-chain, and to match the published release schedule the Foundation would mint the first seven months' worth and the rest monthly, all into the Community Treasury. Both posts stress that no new tokens are being created and no holder action is required.

Risk Management and Ecosystem Coordination

The delisting category shows the forum's operational role. When Pyth announced it would deprecate its Pyth Core price feeds on July 31, Folks posted a staged delisting for the eleven affected assets — rsETH, tBTC, MaticX, ATH, PYUSD, RLUSD, AERO, cbETH, VIRTUAL, KAITO and USDE. Collateral factors step down to 0%¹² over six weeks ending July 23 while borrow factors climb, and users are told to repay loans, remove collateral and withdraw deposits. The staging matters because a lending market that accepts an asset as collateral must wind that exposure down before the price feed it relies on disappears.

The forum also hosts coordination with other Algorand protocols. In June, a community member flagged a Tinyman governance proposal to deploy 9 million idle TINY tokens from an airdrop wallet into Folks' isolated markets — which would roughly double current TINY deposits — and Filo welcomed it: 'we would be happy to welcome them.' A staged pilot deployment then went to a Tinyman forum vote before any on-chain vote.

Where the Forum Stops

None of this should be mistaken for a bustling community square. On the day this was researched, the board recorded no new topics and no new posts across its six categories, with four active users; most threads draw view counts in the double digits or low hundreds. It is run by the team — CEO Benedetto Biondi is listed as a moderator, and Filo, an employee, authors the official announcements — which makes it a channel for the protocol to explain itself in public rather than an independent check on it; a 2023 transparency thread ended with a user noting that a question about the protocol's employees had not really been answered. It also doubles as a support desk: developer Scholtz filed Folks router bug reports over months, including an expired SSL certificate in September 2024 that was acknowledged and fixed, and in February 2024 posted a warning about a phishing domain, folks-reward.org, that was sending scam notes to Algorand addresses.

The forum operates against a shrinking base. DeFiLlama, which scopes to the Algorand protocol, puts Folks Finance's TVL at about $46.5 million as of mid-August 2026 — roughly where it has hovered for a year after peaking at $111 million in September 2025.

For all its quiet, the board has done what a governance surface must: it surfaced dissent, staged risk, and turned community input into binding votes. Whether its next decisions carry the same weight depends on whether the people who hold FOLKS keep showing up.
