Community-built AlgorandStats charted ten governance periods, then stopped updating

Built out of a numbers problem

On October 16, 2021 — two weeks before voting opened in Algorand's first governance period — a user posting as u/Algly announced a small site he had just put online in r/algorand. 'I created a website that shows Algorand governance stats,' he wrote. 'I made this website from frustration because I found it hard to see what my current % will be.'

The domain, algorandstats.com¹, had been registered the day before. Its earliest archived form — a Wayback snapshot from October 20, 2021² — was a calculator for the participation-rewards model then winding down: an estimated 17.49%¹ APY built from 43.70² ALGO per block, a 4.38³-second average block time, and 6.61 billion ALGO staked. Algorand's first governance period had begun September 30, and the site quickly grew into the community's running ledger for it.

What a governance page shows

The site organizes periods by year — Governance 2021, 2022, 2023, and 2024 — with each year expanding into its quarters: period #1⁴ under 2021, #2⁵ through #5⁶ under 2022, #6⁷ through #9⁸ under 2023, and #10⁹ under 2024. Every page carries the same framing line: 'Governance works in cycles. Each cycle lasts three months and contains a sign up phase, a voting phase and a rewards phase.'

Each period page is built the same way: a header with the period's status (all ten read 'Completed') and its reward pool, split into a base governance reward and a DeFi bonus reward; headline figures for governance APR, total committed ALGO, and governor count; a dated timeline of the cycle's phases; a governors list with one row per committed address — commitment amount, a column for every voting session (later periods stretch to 'V1-M18'), an eligible/ineligible status, and registration and ineligible dates; and two histograms bucketing governors and committed stake into twelve size ranges, from 0-1 ALGO to 50 million and beyond. The list filters by commitment type: general, DeFi, liquid governance, or liquidity-provider governance.

In the incentivized model, committing meant locking ALGO for the quarter — a transfer into the period's governance escrow recorded on-chain — in exchange for a share of that period's reward pool and a vote on ecosystem measures. Attrition was real: in period 1, per a Reddit summary of the final results, 1.9 billion ALGO was committed by 52,200 governors, of whom 18,728 dropped out holding 24.5 million ALGO.

Why its numbers carried weight

The dashboard is a front end on official records rather than an independent indexer. Its React bundle queries the Algorand Foundation's governance API³ for periods, voting sessions, and per-governor activity, alongside tryalgorand.com's governance endpoints and Algo Explorer's indexer — no backend of its own, which is why the figures matched the Foundation's and could be cited.

The community did cite them. A Redditor quoted the site for period 1's payout ('Gov #1 came out at 14.05% APR >> 3.5125% quarterly payout. Numbers from algorandstats.com'), another called it his favorite among the reward calculators, and on the Algorand forum⁴ users pointed newcomers to it as late as July 2024 to check a wallet's eligibility. The Foundation's own analytics-tools guide⁵ lists AlgorandStats alongside its Metrics Dashboard and AlgorandObserver⁶.

The shrinking pot

Base governance rewardDeFi bonus reward

Drawn from the ten period pages, the reward pools tell the program's own story: the base governance reward held near 60–70.5 million ALGO across the first four quarters, then slid by roughly three-quarters to 14.35 million by period 10¹¹, while a DeFi bonus reward grew from nothing to as much as 17.5 million before easing back. Across the whole program, the Foundation reported, governors committed 33.9 billion¹² ALGO — an average of 2.4 billion¹³ per period — drew an average of 25,000¹⁴ participants per period and nearly 50,000¹⁵ at the peak, and received 687.5 million¹⁶ ALGO in total distributions. These pages render the first ten rounds of that run, quarter by quarter.

Where it stopped — and what remains

The newest menu item is 'Governance 2024', and the last populated page is period #10, which ended March 31, 2024. The Foundation's API, by contrast, lists fifteen periods — numbers 11 through 15 ran from April 2024 to July 2025 — so the dashboard fell silent four rounds before the program itself ended.

The program did end. On March 31, 2025, the Foundation announced: 'After three and a half years, Algorand's Governance Rewards program is ending,' pointing holders to the newer staking-rewards program and node runners to xGov⁷, the community grant-funding program; the governance platform's current reminder reads 'Governance is no longer incentivized with rewards.' The subject this site documented no longer exists in incentivized form — which is precisely what makes the archive valuable, and what makes its gaps visible. The same Foundation guide that lists the tool describes it as visualizing 'transaction volume, active addresses, and block times' — none of which the current pages render; the 'Stats' menu item leads to an empty page. Beyond the Reddit posts, the pages carry no author attribution or contact — just a footer line reading 'Algorandstats.com 2026 - v2.8.3¹⁷', a date stamp nearly two years newer than the newest period page.

For anyone who governed through periods 1–10 — or who wants to check whether an address that committed then stayed eligible — the pages remain live, free, and wired to the same Foundation API. As a real-time tracker it stopped in early 2024; as a record of the rewards era, it is one of the few places the whole arc is laid out in one place, quarter by quarter.
