Algo Cleanup's transparency ledger went quiet in 2021; its blog ran to 2025

A bucket, a claw, and a blockchain

Joe Sloan introduced Algo Cleanup to the world in an r/AlgorandOfficial post in August 2021 with an unusually candid label: 'a grassroots project to help with Algorand's marketing.' The project's own mission statement is softer: 'to make cleaning up our local communities simple and fun,' using Algorand to keep donations transparent and to reward the people doing the work.

The site still reads like a one-person operation, because it is. A 'Get Involved' page walks visitors through Sloan's own neighborhood cleanup kit: a 5¹-gallon bucket, backpack straps marketed for apple picking, a grabber tool he calls 'the claw,' gloves, a divider to separate trash from recycling, even printable flags for flagging broken sprinkler heads on morning dog walks. The project's stated goals are three: make cleanup fun and engaging, provide simple resources so cleaning up becomes a habit, and leverage technology to foster local change.

An NFT series that ran two editions

The technology in question was, for the first year, NFTs (non-fungible tokens — unique digital items whose ownership is tracked on a blockchain). Each month, Algo Cleanup planned to select a photo of someone cleaning up their community, invite artists to reinterpret it, then mint both images as Algorand Standard Assets — tokens issued directly on Algorand's base layer, inheriting the chain's speed and security — and auction them off. The proceeds were split three ways:

The archive tells the actual story of that plan: two editions exist, from August and September 2021. Series #001² was given away rather than sold. Series #002³ minted four NFTs, but its inspiration and interpretation NFTs appear unsold — the archive's 'Still Available' link points to AlgoGems listing ID 326139659, and a lookup of that asset ID on Algorand's indexer returns no matching token. No further monthly editions were minted.

A grant and a transparency promise

Sloan's transparency pitch did catch the attention of the Algorand Foundation⁴, which announced on September 15, 2021 that Algo Cleanup had received a grant 'to provide accessible resources to address littering, pollution, and water waste.' The grant amount was never made public. In the announcement, Sloan explained the appeal: 'Algorand provides a fast and secure blockchain making project transparency simple. Algorand's commitment to being a carbon negative blockchain squarely aligns with environmentally focused projects.'

The transparency mechanism itself is real and still works. Algo Cleanup publishes a public Algorand address on every page, and a page titled 'Transparency' itemizes withdrawals from the project wallet. Algorand's ledger is a public record of all transactions, so anyone can check the accounting independently. On that page, Sloan wrote: 'I'm a small one man team, but I will account for all withdrawals from the projects wallet.'

Where the donations went

The ledger lists exactly two withdrawals, both from the project's first months: 14.245⁵ ALGO toward domain registration, and 76.22⁶ ALGO for stickers used in bucket giveaways. The wallet's stated purposes for donations were those giveaways, website maintenance, and minting Algo Cleanup NFTs.

The on-chain record shows more than the ledger does. The project wallet, which received its first funding in August 2021, shows small donations trickling in through 2024 and early 2025 — typically a few ALGO at a time, with a 50 ALGO receipt on January 4, 2025. Three days later, on January 7, 2025, 353.8 ALGO was sent out of the wallet to another address. That withdrawal does not appear in the transparency table, whose last entry remains the September 2021 sticker purchase. Today the wallet holds 1.516 ALGO — barely above Algorand's 1.5 ALGO account minimum — which is why the footer widget on every page, rounding the live balance, reads 'Donations: 2⁷ Algos.' The account has shown no on-chain movement since that January 2025 transfer.

The blog became the main output

While the cleanup side of the project went quiet, algocleanup.com⁸ kept publishing. Its blog became, in effect, an educational outlet for Algorand DeFi (decentralized finance — financial services built on blockchain without traditional intermediaries), with a heavy focus on governance.

The publishing history shows where the energy went:

Through 2023 and 2024, Sloan wrote detailed walkthroughs of Folks Finance⁹'s liquid governance products (gAlgo and xAlgo, which let holders keep liquidity while committing ALGO to governance), explainers on the xGov expert-governor program, governance reward calculators with period-by-period APR tables, and posts about ecosystem tokens and NFTs. The subjects read like a syllabus for the average Algorand holder trying to maximize governance yield, rather than an environmental campaign. The most recent post, dated September 23, 2025, promotes Algoland, the Algorand Foundation's 13¹⁰-week gamified quest campaign whose grand prizes included 100,000¹¹ ALGO, a vacation for two, and an e-bike — a campaign that has since concluded its first season, according to Algoland's site¹².

Where Algo Cleanup stands

Five years after the grant, Algo Cleanup is neither a thriving community program nor an abandoned scam. It is a small, honest record of an idea that mostly didn't scale: the bucket-and-grabber method is genuinely practical, the NFT model was genuinely creative, and the accounting failure is not hidden — it is visible to anyone willing to check the public ledger, which is precisely the property the project set out to demonstrate. What remains active is the educational blog, a one-person DeFi explainer with a last post from September 2025. For a project that promised to make cleanup 'simple and fun,' the simpler truth is that cleanup was hard, but the public accounting — even when it shows an unreconciled 353.8 ALGO transfer and a wallet at minimum balance — worked exactly as advertised.
